Many modern diesel generator sets come with a control panel – an interface to control the diesel generator set, this blog focuses on the diesel generator control panel part. A diesel generator is a device that converts power into electrical energy for external use. They can be used in a wide range of applications, simultaneously powering many different devices.

There are two main questions here, what is a diesel generator control panel and how does a diesel generator panel work?

What is a Diesel Generator Control Panel?

The first major question we want to answer is what is a diesel generator control panel and what it does. The diesel generator control panel is a display parameter that shows different details and parameters about the diesel generator while the diesel generator is running.

This includes details such as current, voltage, and frequency. Some diesel generator control panels have a built-in display so the operator can visually view and review diesel generator functions. Some control panels have gauges and gauges that will also display information.

All diesel generator control panels will have built-in displays, gauges, or gauges. Typically, they are housed in metal waterproof enclosures and mounted on diesel generators. They also feature anti-vibration pads to help insulate the control panel from the shocks that a diesel generator can cause while it is running.

Larger commercial diesel generators, such as industrial-grade versions or high-voltage diesel generators, usually have a control panel separate from the diesel generator itself. This is due to the sheer size of some of them. Due to weight and size, the control panels installed for these diesel generators are usually self-contained option and can be wall-mounted or rack-mounted.

Many diesel generator control panels also feature buttons and switches that can help ensure the smooth operation of the diesel generator. In addition to the on/off switch, the diesel generator control panel also has preset modes that can instruct the diesel generator to perform a specific configuration, focusing on monitoring specific parameters.

Typically, all switches and gauges are gathered together and placed in groups according to their function. This can make the diesel generator set control panel easy to use and operate. It minimizes the chance of a diesel generator operator accidentally hitting the wrong control by accident, especially in emergency situations.

The control panel can also be considered as the user interface of the diesel generator depending on its operation and functionality. It allows the Builder Controller to view and inspect things such as system diagnostics, capabilities, and the current status of grantors. After all, they are very heavy machines and essential equipment for many capabilities. They can be prone to issues like overheating, and speed fluctuations, and can suffer from other issues like general wear and tear.

How Do Diesel Generator Panels Work?

In short, the diesel generator control panel contains a microprocessor that can process and manipulate input sensors, which can feed back necessary information to the control panel, helping the operator to manage and use the diesel generator more efficiently.

A common feedback setup is a thermometer. When the temperature of the diesel engine reaches the temperature threshold, the diesel generator will automatically shut down to prevent damage.

Diesel generator control panels are sometimes paired with ATS automatic transfer switches. The ATS will prompt the diesel generator to start in the event of a power outage due to a power outage.

Once power is restored from the main grid, the diesel generators will be shut down in time. As services begin from there, the main grid will be restored. This is because ATS is connected. However, the control panel operator can also use a manual switch if the particular diesel generator is capable.

Without an ATS automatic transfer switch, the diesel generator must be switched on manually. This is called an MTS manual transfer switch, and when a power outage occurs, the diesel generator must also be manually shut down after power is restored, which can be avoided with an ATS. Backup power with an automatic transfer switch will aid in the function of the control panel. Failure to shut down diesel generators after mains power is restored can lead to an effect known as feedback. Feedback can be a big problem going forward for diesel generator and control panel operations.
